Special consultant for applied research in bats


The Department of Ecoscience (ECOS), Aarhus University, is looking for an
international Specialist Consultant for applied research in bats and other terrestrial
mammals.

Expected start date and duration of employment
This is a permanent position planned to start on May 1st 2023, or as soon as possible
thereafter.

Job description
The Special Consultant will be responsible for managing and contributing to applied
research and consultancy projects on bats and small terrestrial mammals in particular
and other terrestrial mammals in general.
The successful candidate will participate in existing projects on monitoring and research
in relation to bats and off-shore wind energy development and updating of management
guidelines for bats and small mammals.
The candidate is expected to initiate new research, monitoring and advisory projects in
relation to bats and other terrestrial mammals and to support science based
management and conservation actions for wildlife.
We are looking for an open and accommodating person with a creative approach to
challenging wildlife conservation issues.
The candidate will be a member of the Wildlife Ecology Section

Expertise required for this position includes
- As a minimum, you must have a MSc degree in biology and extensive experience in
  applied ecology and conservation of bats and small terrestrial mammals.

- A background in hands-on monitoring, applied research and consultancy for local and
  national authorities.

- A solid knowledge of bats and factors influencing detection and quality of ultrasonic
  sounds.

- Experience with hardware and software for acoustics monitoring and analyses of
  recordings from acoustic monitoring and monitoring of small mammals with wildlife
  cameras.

- Experience of collaborating in international networks.

The successful candidate must also have knowledge or experience in, the following
areas

- Planning and organizing applied research and monitoring projects of bats and other
  small terrestrial mammals.

- Preparation and quality assurance of scientific and consultancy reports.

- Communication with statutory authorities, nature conservation organizations and
  volunteers.

- Dissemination in both Danish and English.

Who we are
The Department of Ecoscience is engaged in research program­mes, teaching curricula
and advisory work covering the major biological subdisciplines.
We conduct world-class research in the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, arctic
environment and ecosystems, biodiversity and conservation biology.
The Department currently employs approximately 250 academic and technical staff, as
well as many PhD students.

The Special Consultant will work in a vibrant and internationally engaged scientific
environment at the Section for Wildlife Ecology, primarily composed of wildlife
biologists and social scientists.
